St. Petersburg, FL - ARTicles Art Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition Still Lives: photo poems by Nin McQuillen, a St. Petersburg artist who explores personal narratives about intimacy through the arrangement and assemblage of sacred collections.

McQuillen is known for his b&w street photography spanning forty years of picture-taking. Included in this exhibition are previously unreleased images of encounters colored by an inquisitiveness that time has textured with melancholia. Like a time capsule, McQuillen's archives document years of life in St. Petersburg and his travels as a young man. Some raw, some tender, in this retrospective context, his body of work speaks of passion, loss, and reconciliation.

His current work, photographic imagery created directly on a flatbed scanner, invokes the lush sensuality of 17th century Dutch still life painting. The deep color saturation, sublime texture, and unearthly glow of this new work emphasize a rejection of the modernist aesthetic. McQuillen utilizes an iconography of found objects, family mementos, and memorabilia to weave fantastical visual stories of when elephants walked this city's streets and mullet boats sat like ancient ruins at low tide.

An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on November 9th, 6-9 pm. The exhibition will be on view until December 10, 2013. For more information, contact the gallery at 727-898-6061.

On Saturday, there will be two free Art Trolleys taking you on a tour of over 35 galleries, warehouses and artist studios that are staying open late just for you! Ride the trolley (it's FREE!) to these venues or download the map to drive yourself.  And if you decide to hang around the Central Arts District (between 3rd and 8th Streets on Central), you can walk a safe, enjoyable 4 blocks brimming with dozens of galleries, studios and restaurants!

This month's trolleys are sponsored by the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance and will be taking you from Beach Drive to Central & 31st and deep into the heart of the Warehouse Arts District.

Critique at Soft Water Studios.

Wednesday, October 30th, I conducted an art critique at Soft Water Studios, courtesy of sculptor Mark Aeling and painter Carrie Jadus. It was a modest turn out, but considering it was the first time, not bad at all. My idea of a critique is participatory, involving peers. Although we more or less followed the standard format for critiquing, the discussion was fluid, dynamic and spirited. There was a variety of media, techniques, styles and more. From traditional and semi-academic to outrageous, we explored the works in some depth, and through them, art itself.

  It was wonderful to see people talking fluently about art, face to face. It was a shared educational experience for all of us, one I look forward to doing again, and next time I want to encourage collectors and art lovers alike to join us.

A special note of thanks to Carrie Jadus and Mark Aeling of Softwater Studios for involving me in this idea and making it happen. Every museum and major institution recognizes the importance of community outreach and its benefits.

Temptations: The 40th Day in the Desert,

You own a gallery. You see yourself in competition with other galleries. So you pull in your own direction. I mean, it's the thing to do, right?

Wrong. Your competition are the trinket shops along the beach and tourist traps. The tourists do not know you exist, an they are not going to leave Beach Drive or the Beach itself. If you think of yourself and your gallery as a destination, check your bloated ego at the door. The only thing that is going to persuade a tourist to leave the cluster/clot of other tourists is a destination of multiple potential stops (in part because they think there will be others like themselves there. That means The 600 block, Central Arts District, and Warehouse District, not one single gallery. 

 An arts community is far more attractive than one single gallery.

It is time to think bigger. This is why Beach Drive works, or the Beaches, Disney and all the other parks, etc.
