“Exit Music” On Display At American Stage Theater – New Paintings By Nathan Beard
ST. PETERSBURG, FL – December 1, 2013
American Stage Theater is the setting for Nathan Beard’s latest series of acrylic abstract paintings. Entitled “Exit Music”, the series explores the theme of transition by blurring the distinctions between foreground and background. Beard uses dynamic color contrasts and two different resist techniques, one liquid (rubbing alcohol) and one dry (painter’s tape), to achieve constantly shifting surfaces held together by serpentine curves.
Exit music is played at the end of a performance while the audience is departing, signaling both the end of the imaginary world they were privy to and their sobering reemergence into daily life. Beard is drawn to this as a metaphor for transition and for the complicated and often contradictory feelings that exiting or "the end" conjures. Without delving into the apocryphal, the Exit Music paintings address the entire theater of life, from intimacy and conception to recent political upheavals in the Middle East.
Nathan Beard’s paintings hang in conjunction with weekly performances of  A Marvelous Party!: The Noel Coward Celebration and will be on view until January 17, 2014 in the theater lobby, located on the second floor. American Stage Theater Company is located at 163 3rd Street North, St Petersburg, FL, 33701 and the exhibit is open for general viewing Monday-Friday, 10am – 6pm. A formal opening reception will be held December 14th from 11am -12:30pm.
