Geschoold in creativeit, autodidact in de technische kant van metaalbewerking. 

Als moderne smid maak ik sculpturen van ijzer/staal.

Krachtige dieren en fantasie-figuren zijn een rode draad in mijn werk. Voortbeweging zoals

vliegen en reizen vindt u geregeld terug in mijn werk. Vaak laat ik me inspireren door het

materiaal (gebruikt ijzer), maar meestal is het mijn fantasie waaruit de sculpturen ontstaan.

In mijn smidse vorm ik het koude metaal tot warme sculpturen. Terug naar de basis, ijzer

en vuur, hamer en aambeeld. Smeden zoals men 2000 jaar geleden ook al deed. Echt oer.

Metaalbewerking is een fantastisch middel om mijn ideeën vorm te geven. Altijd gedreven en

vooruitstrevend werk ik aan mijn beelden.

Mijn werk wordt tentoongesteld tijdens exposities in beeldenparken, galerieën, kunstbeurzen en

evenementen door heel Nederland en ook in Duitsland, België, Frankrijk en Rusland. Ik maak

opdrachten voor klanten en gemeenten. Mijn werk is in privé-collecties in Nederland, België,

Duitsland, Luxemburg, Frankrijk, Zweden, Griekenland en in de USA.

De sculpturen zijn gemaakt van cor-ten-staal en nieuw en gebruikt ijzer (vaak oude

gereedschappen). Altijd uit dik en stevig materiaal. Mijn werk is geschikt voor binnen en buiten.

Did someone's heart break or did someone do somebody wrong?

Last week was a great week for us at DUFI - a day of brainstorming and creative thinking about Invergordon, putting our proposal together and presenting it to the board, a day in the office putting together quotes, finishing a few small jobs and getting some invoices done (unfortunately we can't do everything we do for nothing!), a day on the West Coast doing a community workshop and then on Friday I managed to get out of the office and do a photoshoot! Almost the perfect mix of creativity and practicality for us...

Anhyhow, thought I would attached a few shots from Friday for you. While shooting for a client up at Culloden Battlefield I took a few pics of the building. Think its a really fantastic piece of architecture designed by Gareth Hoskins Architects (of Scotlands first Venice Architecture Biennale in 2008 fame). It blends really well into the environment with its choice of materials, exaggerated length and the way it sits on the horizon and skyline when viewed from the battlefield itself. - FIN

Welcome: Giovanni Gelmi

Dancing metallic lines - elegant, unassuming, and somehow so easy to imagine making music.

Ce qui frappe dans le travail de Gelmi,  c'est l'éclectisme de ses œuvres, mais  également la grande dextérité du soudeur. Tantôt des réalisations à la facture puissante mettent en avant la brutalité de l'acier - qu'il aime à marier au mouvement -, tantôt des œuvres plus fines, plus légères, plus sophistiquées, se moquent du point d'équilibre et la musicalité l’emporte.
Voilà un sculpteur, professeur de soudure en substance, qui a su, à merveille, déjouer les catégories d’un art qui repose sur un vrai métier.

Ik tover met goud en zilver sprookjes te voorschijn in de vorm van juwelen.  Ik hou ervan wanneer een ring niet enkel een sierstuk is, maar ook een verhaal vertelt... Wanneer een hanger je meevoert naar een romantisch verleden of oorbellen de nostalgie van verre koninkrijken oproepen... Vaak besprenkel ik de sierraden met een tikkeltje humor.

Nieuw of slapend goud kan ik verwerken tot tijdloze creaties, trouwringen, rouwjuwelen, hebbedingen of pure verwennerij.

Parels, koraal, edelstenen, kralen en gravures nemen allemaal een bijzonder plekje in binnen mijn werk. 

Het enige wat er nog te doen staat, is genieten.

Transfiguration

Ils naissent de la terre,

prennent vie entre ses doigts

et durcissent par le feu.

Dans la lueur des flammes,

un monde fusionne

entre fantaisie et imagination.

On y reconnaît nos joies,

nos faiblesses,

nos travers.

Tous ces êtres d’argile participent du même élan,

bras déployés et cœur ouvert.

Geste spontané,

moues expressives,

langage du corps.

Silence !

Michel Vranckx est à l’œuvre.

Laissez ses sculptures vous prendre par la main ;

elles donnent envie de vivre.

Né à Bruxelles en 1956, Michel Vranckx a installé son atelier-galerie dans le Brabant wallon. Dessinateur de presse et caricaturiste ‘de salon’ à la mine ravageuse, il s’exprime aussi depuis quelques années par la sculpture.

Cette dernière discipline lui permet d’ajouter une troisième dimension à ses personnages. Son penchant naturel pour la caricature s’inscrit dans une démarche esthétique qui marie l’expression, le mouvement et l’humour.

« Je sculpte comme je dessine. Je m’inspire du monde qui m’entoure et le transforme en dessin animé. Mes personnages naissent de la terre, se transforment sous mes doigts et durcissent par le feu. C’est la magie de la céramique au raku. »

Go play a video game

What a day - the sun is shining, we've had lunch and back in the office after a trip to Ullapool for a workshop at an talla solais (a visual arts centre in the village with great facilities). Are going to be doing a few workshops there with a group of pupils with the intention of designing a big piece for somewhere in the village.

Had fun today with grids and getting them to sketch something small in a pixel pattern that we hope they will be able to spray their own tags next week. We made a wee example for them ourselves (Pacman based!) and sprayed it on the pathway with chalk.

Followed this up with a trip to Rhue Art and the new gallery. Fantastic space to show in... Good to catch up with James and Flick Hawkins over a mug of homemade lemon and ginger tea and hear what new work James is experimenting with.

Back in the office now and doing paperwork. Ah, the yin and yang of being an artist. - FIN

As they fall, you'll hear me I'll call

So last night was a bit of a milestone as far as the Invergordon Off The Wall project went. All three artists were asked to present proposals for their pieces of Public Art for the town and it was a nerve wracking experience for us all.

We have kept our cards pretty close to our chest up to this point so it really was something new for them to get their heads around. It all went extremely well with a general consensus of agreement on our plans which was a pleasant surprise to us!

Our work so far has been centred around the gathering of stories and experiences (using the cookbook and Gaelic storytelling/song as a tool) and this idea of being "rooted and grounded" was a starting point for us. It really felt like our beginnings should be with a tree. The three languages are represented by upright pillars that are united by a circular ring of stainless steel. The work will constantly evolve as the seasons change and tree grows around and through the different sculptural elements.

It is proposed that the ground works will include text that runs down the base of the pillars onto the ground and out in three directions to represent roots and emphasise the cultural diversity of people within this small Highland town.

More will follow as time goes on but the works to go to planning for permission in the next month and the hard work begins after that...A wee sketch to give you a visual idea - remember its a sketch! - AL
